What is a Drone Gimbal?

Getting professional-looking, high-quality video and still pictures from your drone requires the use of a gimbal.2 axis gimbal drone The gimbal stabilizes the camera in flight, reducing vibration that can lead to shake and blurriness. The gimbal allows the user to move in any direction and still have the camera remain level, a feature that is extremely useful when filming fast-paced activities. In addition, the gimbal can be used to capture panoramic images.

The basic design of a gimbal is relatively simple – it’s essentially a small base onto which a camera (typically a GoPro) mounts.2 axis gimbal drone Inside of that are three brushless motors that work to keep the camera holder level and vibration free. They are powered by an inertial measurement unit that senses movement and reacts accordingly. The inertial measurement unit can even distinguish deliberate movements from the unwanted vibrations generated by the drone itself.

Drone gimbals are available in two different formats – as a separate device on which you can attach your own camera (such as the DJI GoPro mount), or as a complete camera/gimbal assembly that you can purchase from a manufacturer (DJI, Blade, Yuneec).2 axis gimbal drone They are usually powered by either brushed or brushless motors, though most of the gimbals sold today are brushless. The biggest difference between a brushed and a brushless motor is that a brushed motor uses brushes to create friction to turn its rotors, while a brushless motor has permanent magnets that rotate around the perimeter of its rotors, eliminating the need for any friction at all.

The most common type of drone gimbal is a two-axis camera gimbal.2 axis gimbal drone The two axes of the gimbal help to stabilize the camera in a roll and pitch motion. This is necessary because drones are often used in moving environments that can cause the aircraft to tilt and rotate in unexpected ways. This type of gimbal is the most popular and easiest to find in consumer drones, but it’s not without its limitations.

Three-axis gimbals are more expensive than two-axis gimbals, but they provide significantly better quality footage. The reason is that the three-axis gimbals can balance any of three axes of movement, including tilt, pan, and roll. This gives the gimbal the ability to capture more of the footage you’d expect from a pro-grade video camera.

The gimbal is also able to reduce the vibration caused by the drone’s propellers, which can lead to a more stable image. The result is a much sharper, clearer, and more precise image that’s easy to edit in post-production.

A gimbal can be particularly useful for industrial applications. For example, a front-mounted two-axis gimbal can be used to inspect tight spaces such as the underside of bridges by giving inspectors an unobstructed view from top to bottom.

It’s important to note that when selecting a drone gimbal, you should look for one that comes pre-calibrated. While it isn’t difficult to calibrate a gimbal, doing so adds an additional step that many beginner pilots will want to avoid.
