How Factors Affect Electro-Optical Sensor Performance
Whether mounted in an aircraft or on bombs and missiles, electro-optical (EO) systems are designed to display an image of the target to the pilot, aviator, bombardier/navigator (B/N), or weapon system officer (WSO).2 axis 1kg eo sensor These devices detect energy that is directly reflected off the target. The reflected energy may be visible light, infrared radiation, or radio waves. The type of energy emitted depends on the target’s temperature and may be different from the energy that absorbs it.
The EO system’s ability to distinguish the target from its background is determined by its contrast performance.2 axis 1kg eo sensor This is the difference between the intrinsic contrast that two objects have based on their properties and the apparent contrast that is detected at a certain distance, x. The limiting value of this contrast is called threshold contrast. The point where the exponential curve for contrast meets the threshold contrast value gives the maximum lock-on or acquisition range.
There are several factors that can affect the EO sensor’s performance, including weather, varying target sizes and characteristics, and optical conditions.2 axis 1kg eo sensor The most significant impact, however, is the sensor’s sensitivity, which can be affected by the type of EO sensor it has, as well as the ambient environment in which it operates.
For example, a thermal camera’s sensitivity is significantly affected by temperature. An uncooled EO sensor’s sensitivity is less sensitive than a cooled one. As a result, the sensors require different levels of contrast to achieve threshold. It is important to understand how these different factors affect the EO sensor’s performance so that you can anticipate them and prepare for them during a mission. This will maximize the EO system’s effectiveness and help you get more targets on target during a combat operation.
